It’s official: HOV lanes are coming to two highways near you.

The Texas Transportation Commission approved plans to build the lanes on parts of U.S. 281 and Interstate 10 in San Antonio at its meeting Thursday.

HOV lanes, short for high-occupancy vehicle lanes, are reserved for transit vehicles and cars with more than one occupant.

“Public transportation provides options for commuters,” said Hope Andrade, who chairs VIA Metropolitan Transit’s board of trustees. “It makes the entire transportation system work more efficiently, and it even provides benefits for those who do not use it.”

The special lanes will be built as part of a plan to expand I-10 between La Cantera Parkway and Ralph Fair Road by building two new lanes in each direction. One will be an HOV lane, and the other will be available for all vehicles to use.

They are also included in a plan to convert part of U.S. 281 between Loop 1604 and Borgfeld Drive into a six-lane freeway with two HOV lanes, one in each direction.
